MASCOT constantly balances its sustainability efforts at the intersection between high product quality on the one hand, understood as high durability among others, and product security on the other, understood as socially and environmentally responsible products. In general, this is known as the triple bottom line. There needs to be a good balance in place in order for the company to operate in a sound and innovative way with good customer potential.
In other words, there are still some practical challenges to be tackled in regard to sustainability. For example, our customers recognise MASCOT's products as being particularly wear resistant and durable. But when old polyester fibres are recycled, the new fibres which emerge from the recycling process are not quite as durable. This is something that has to be taken into consideration when selecting recycled materials. It is for this reason that MASCOT has chosen to use recycled materials in areas where wear resistance is not so much of a challenge. That is why all of MASCOT's lining material is made from 35 % recycled polyester. This is even the case for our super lightweight and extremely insulating CLIMASCOT® lining.
Our range also includes a number of products made from TENCEL®. TENCEL® is a 100 % natural material which is obtained from trees. It offers a number of clear advantages when it comes to the comfort of products: TENCEL® is better at absorbing moisture than cotton, softer than silk and more cooling than linen. In addition, TENCEL® is also an environmentally friendly and sustainable fibre. TENCEL® is produced exclusively from sustainable forestry. Only 1 % of the water needed to make cotton is used in the production of TENCEL®. You will find TENCEL® used in a variety of colours and product types, from trousers and jackets through to bib and brace overalls and polo shirts.
Reducing the weight of the workwear is also good for the environment, as this means a reduction in the quantity of raw materials compared with previously This can be done by developing and using advanced fabric qualities which are lightweight while still being just as wear resistant as alternative, sturdier fabrics. This is the case for the latest generation of workwear with stretch, such as fabric quality 311 in MASCOT® ADVANCED. The same also applies to some of the textile brands that we collaborate with, such as Dyneema®, which is used for the kneepad pockets in MASCOT® ADVANCED. Dyneema® is an extremely wear resistant material that is also incredibly lightweight. This means that only a limited number of resources are required in order to attain a high level of wear resistance at the knees, which is something that's well needed by tradesmen the world over.
There are many different methods that can be used to increase sustainability in the production of workwear. Here at MASCOT, we are constantly seeking out new opportunities to further improve our environmental work, which is why we always take great care when it comes to the resources we use. We constantly adapt new measures in order to become even more sustainable. Using recycled materials in our clothing is just one of many possibilities. Another focus area is selecting material suppliers that also take environmental aspects into consideration when producing their fabrics, etc. For example, the vast bulk of the many millions of meters of fabric that MASCOT buys each year is bought from suppliers who have the ISO 14001 certification.
